FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Electrostatic spraying is the process of applying a charged liquid to a surface. A charge is induced on the liquid droplets as they are formed, just before exiting the sprayer nozzle. When the charged droplets approach a surface, they induce an opposite charge on the surface which then attracts the charged droplet to the surface. The charged droplets also repel each other, preventing them from coalescing into larger droplets. The repulsion also allows the droplet to uniformly cover surfaces. Droplets can even be attracted to the backs of surfaces regardless of the direction of spray, enabling them to “wrap” around a range of surface types including curved surfaces. In this respect, electrostatic spraying can be considered an “active” application technology in that liquid droplets are attracted to surfaces. With normal or non-charged “passive” spraying, the coverage of surfaces is determined by the direction of spray and where the droplets fall based on the effect of gravity and may result in uneven surface coverage.

The electrostatic spraying process has been used for more than 60 years in painting and agriculture applications. In agriculture, electrostatic sprayers are used for the efficient application of pesticides to plants, to help treat the “hidden” undersides of leaves that pesticides applied using regular non-charged sprayer applications are unable to reach. The more uniform coverage of the fine electrostatically charged droplets also allows for better coverage of surfaces with less pesticide compared to application with a non-charged sprayer.

ByoPlanet Electrostatic Sprayer Systems feature patented nozzle technology to ensure all surfaces are properly disinfected and sanitized. The system also features a powerful air compressor that helps the system cover more surfaces in less time, and the corded system provides constant electrostatic output to keep performance consistent. Additionally, ByoPlanet Electrostatic Sprayer Systems are Underwriter Laboratories (UL) Listed.

ByoPlanet Electrostatic Sprayer Systems deliver electrostatically charged droplets that are actively attracted to surfaces, including the exposed back sides of surfaces regardless of the direction of spray. Misters and fogging systems deliver very small droplets that passively deposit on surfaces based on the direction of spray and the effect of gravity.

Cleaning is the removal of debris such as organic and inorganic material (often called “soil”) from objects and surfaces. It is normally accomplished manually or mechanically using water with detergents or enzymatic products.

Sanitizing is the reduction of organisms on a surface.

Disinfecting is the destruction of organisms on surfaces. In order for a product to be classified as a disinfectant it must be capable of completely destroying organisms on a surface.

Non-food contact surfaces: For a product to be considered a sanitizer for non-food contact surfaces, it should be capable of reducing the number of organisms on a surface by a minimum of 3 log10 (99.9%). This means that if there are 1,000,000 organisms on the surface, an effective sanitizer would remove at least 999,000 organisms, with no more than 1000 organisms remaining.

Food contact surfaces: For a product to be considered a sanitizer for food contact surfaces, it should be capable of reducing the number of organisms on a surface by a minimum of 5 log10 (99.999%). This means that if there are 1,000,000 organisms on the surface, an effective sanitizer would remove at least 999,990 organisms, with no more than 10 organisms remaining.

A ByoPlanet– approved product is a product that has been rigorously tested with our electrostatic sprayer to understand efficacy, worker protection, and residue profile. Being a ByoPlanet- approved product means that ByoPlanet has approved its use with the ByoPlanet electrostatic sprayer.

Disinfectants, sanitizers, and cleaners can be used through ByoPlanet Electrostatic Sprayer System. Only ByoPlanet-approved disinfectants, sanitizers, and cleaners can be used through the sprayer. Product approval varies based on country and use application. Please contact Service Tech Team for a list of available products in your region.

No. The ByoPlanet Electrostatic Sprayer must be used only with ByoPlanet-approved products. Use of a product that is not approved by ByoPlanet will void the warranty on the sprayer.

Dwell time, or contact time, is the amount of time that a surface must remain wet to allow the product to be in contact with an organism in order to kill it. The contact or dwell time of a product will vary and can be found on the product label. It is important to consider the dwell time as a factor when determining which approved product to use.

It depends on the application, but in general ByoPlanet recommends cleaning manually first, then following with ByoPlanet Electrostatic Sprayer System as part of an enhanced disinfection method. The ByoPlanet Electrostatic Sprayer System may also be used for end of day or terminal cleaning in tandem with daily cleaning with manual disinfectants, cleaners, or sanitizers. Regardless of the method chosen, gross soil should be removed prior to use.

When applied according to instructions for use, one (1) gallon of a ByoPlanet- approved product will treat up to 9000 square feet of surfaces through the ByoPlanet electrostatic sprayer. This is 9000 square feet of treated space and not necessarily floor space. When spraying complex geometries work rate is reduced. Note that the exact spray coverage will depend on the contact time of the solution being sprayed through the sprayer.

When ByoPlanet-approved products are applied according to instructions for use it is possible to treat a maximum of 18,000 square feet per hour with application.

The ByoPlanet Electrostatic Sprayer System will deliver one (1) gallon of product in approximately 30 minutes of continuous use when applied according to the instructions for use in the operator’s manual.

No. The ByoPlanet electrostatic sprayer is powered by electricity provided by a standard 3-pronged, grounded outlet. It cannot be used unless it is plugged in.

The ByoPlanet electrostatic sprayer is currently UL Listed for commercial indoor use as well as outdoor use. When using liquid products, always follow the appropriate labeling instructions.

No. The ByoPlanet Electrostatic System has only been evaluated for facilities with a properly functioning HVAC system.

No. The room does not need to be sealed off. However, it is good practice to apply a warning sign to the outside of the room being treated to prevent bystanders from entering while the application of product is in progress. Please ensure that there is a properly functioning HVAC system in place for the room.

Priming is the process of allowing for the liquid to fill the hose line and create a consistent flow of liquid as it exits the sprayer.

We recommend that you purge your device after each use to remove products from the line and keep.

No. The sprayer button can be pressed once to turn on and once to turn off.

Yes. Once the lines have been purged, you can leave partially full bottles on the unit for use the next time. Make sure that caps are replaced on all partially used bottles.

The products approved for use with the sprayer can be used around standard office equipment such as laptops, desktops, keyboards, and monitors but should not be applied directly to any sensitive electronics. Before use refer to the equipment manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and disinfecting. If you are uncertain that it can be used on a specific surface, test its use in an inconspicuous area prior to use.

Store the bottle cap in a safe location in case you need to store partially full bottles on your device.

No. As a safety precaution, we recommend that you use the handle to maneuver the unit.

Yes. Users can purchase and use a longer extension cord for electrostatic sprayer. Options include:

Pair the 25-foot cord that comes with the device with another extension cord of 75 feet length or less such that the total cord length does not exceed 100 feet (30.5 m)

Swap the 25-foot extension cord that comes with the device out for a grounded cord rated for 15 amps, that does not exceed 100 feet (30.5 m) in length.

Whichever option you choose, ByoPlanet recommends using a 12/3-gauge extension cord, with a total cord length of no more than 100 feet (30.5m). Additionally, ByoPlanet recommends the use of a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) power outlet or extension cord. When equipped on the extension cord, always position the GFCI toward the power outlet.

Users should replace the extension cord immediately. Users can purchase or use a longer extension cord for the ByoPlanet electrostatic sprayer. For further details see previous question.
